Benign Neglect combines peeling bell tones with "idle chatter," which may or may not typify the reception accorded most new music in this country in general, or Mr. Tudor's career in particular. The sounds, in any case, are not quite what they seem. The bell is actually a triangle struck with a Zebra M-301 mechanical pencil and transposed down two octaves. The chatter, though, is decidedly idle, recorded at a meeting of foundation executives in New York City on 9 April 1996.
